Inside Hayes Farm

The vision for the impressive collection of buildings was created by James Cathcart Johnston and William Nichols in 1816.  The original Hayes home, settled by Samuel Johnston in 1765 and appearing on the 1769 Sauthier map, no longer exist. Studies using ground penetrating radar will hopefully reveal the original home site and provide more information about the people who lived and died at Hayes.

More detailed information about Hayes and its history can be found in Hayes, The Plantation, Its People, and Their Papers, by, John Zehmer Jr. and Between the River and the Sound, by, Thomas Butchko and Bradley Barker.

Our thanks to Elizabeth Jones for creating this map of Hayes.
