About Hayes Farm

Welcome to Hayes Farm, a 19 th century plantation complex on the Albemarle Sound, just a short walk from historic Edenton, North Carolina.

A National Historic Landmark, the 194-acre estate was first owned by Samuel Johnston and his son, James Cathcart Johnston, from 1765 to 1865 and then by the Wood family through 2022. Hayes is now managed and funded by the Elizabeth Vann Moore Foundation, an organization dedicated to historic preservation in Edenton.

Bordered by cotton, peanut and soybean fields, the 1816 home and 23 dependencies are surrounded by an arboretum of century trees, gardens of historic camellias and boxwoods, and beds of roses and perennials, all with a view to the water.
