Ongoing Restoration

The restoration work at Hayes is ongoing. Current projects include the Cox House, and the Kitchens in the east wing.  Restoration of the Library, in the west wing, is also planned.

Layers of historic evidence lie beneath every board and brick. Once plumbing and wallboard were removed in the laundry area, careful investigation revealed a massive fireplace with curved arches and a stone floor. That same brick chimney dominates the other half of this two-room kitchen. Hidden above is a loft, living quarters for slaves.

Town Plans for Public Use of Hayes

The town of Edenton is an active partner in the development of Hayes as a public site.

The land below the field is already being used for public and family events, from picnics to rock concerts.  Current plans call for walking trails, use of the small beach, playing fields, and eventually a horse therapy program.
